The Fruit

Great wine begins with exceptional fruit. At Mr Barval, we meticulously source ultra-premium grapes from the finest vineyards while also cultivating our own, ensuring every bottle reflects purity, structure and elegance.

In 2022, the opportunity arose to purchase the property that had been home to Mr Barval for five years - along with two vineyards - and we haven't looked back.

One of these vineyards, once planted to Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc but left dormant for a decade, presented an exciting challenge for us. We retained roughly 1 hectare of each variety, nurturing them back into production. Today, their fruit finds new life in our Rosé and Prima Alba.

Where vines were removed, Rob dedicated a full year to revitalising the soil, working with agronomists, planting seasonal cover crops and enriching the land with compost-filled trenches.

In 2023, we embarked on an exciting new chapter, planting Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, Marsanne and Roussanne in a high-density, European style vineyard across 2.5 hectares. These will soon become part of the Mr Barval range, with an estate-grown collection on the horizon. We can't wait!

Beyond our estate, we seek out fruit from Margaret River’s most exceptional sites, forging close relationships with growers to maintain consistency and quality year after year.

We strongly believe Wilyabrup holds the greatest potential for world-class wines. Its proximity to the Indian Ocean moderates temperature and humidity, while its prized gravelly Forest Grove soils and old vines produce outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. From here, we also harvest Merlot, Petit Verdot and a portion of our Nebbiolo, working with some of the region’s most respected growers.

Further south in Wallcliffe, we source Viognier and additional Cabernet Sauvignon from a meticulously tended, north-facing vineyard just 4km from the Indian Ocean, where maritime influences contribute to the fruit’s balance and intensity.

Meanwhile, our final parcels of Chardonnay, Marsanne and Nebbiolo come from an iconic Karridale vineyard - one of the most southerly in the region - planted by a pioneering Australian winemaker. With 36 varieties growing in a single vineyard, it’s a true testament to exploration and innovation.

Positioned between Boranup Beach and Flinders Bay, this cooler-climate site experiences significantly lower temperatures, with harvest typically occurring 2–4 weeks later than in the northern subregions.

By selecting fruit from these carefully chosen sites - and cultivating our own vineyard with care and intention - we ensure that every bottle of Mr Barval wine tells a story of provenance, purity and place.
